From the organisers:

"2014 will see the third edition of ELCAF (East London Comic Arts Festival), taking place on Saturday June 14th at Oval Space in Hackney, London. ELCAF has fast built a reputation for showcasing an abundance of youthful talent in the comic and graphic art scene in London and the UK, as well as some of the most well regarded UK and international talent.

This year, ELCAF have collaborated with highly respected American graphic novelist and cartoonist, Chris Ware, as the festival’s artist-in-residence; best-known as the creator of the Acme Novelty Library, publications in various formats that feature the adventures of characters such as Quimby the Mouse and Jimmy Corrigan. Bridging both comic books and graphic novels, Chris Ware has created a name for himself through his complex storytelling alongside his distinctly recognisable style, often famed for his cut out kits. His graphic novel, Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth, won the 2001 Guardian First Book Award; the first time a graphic novel has won a major UK book award. Many critics and fellow graphic artists consider Chris Ware to be one of the finest proponents of the medium working today.

Alongside Chris Ware will be an exciting roster of around 100 exhibitors; combining individual artists, publishers and organisations, including UK illustration and graphics collective Nous Vous, self publishing comic hero Philippa Rice, children’s book illustrators Alexis Deacon and Viviane Schwarz and children’s literacy organisation Ministry of Stories. All carefully selected by the festival curators and organisers to each bring their own unique creative element to the day.

A Nobrow initiative, ELCAF was founded in 2012 by Sam Arthur and Alex Spiro, further expanding their promotion of graphic art, illustration and art comics in the UK and abroad. ELCAF provides an important platform for the exciting offerings of the flourishing comics and graphics scene through a buzzing arts fair; while Nobrow continues to be a leading proponent of quality in book design and a standard bearer for original creative content in print publishing

The ELCAF 2014 curator and creative producer, for the second year, are Ligaya Salazar and Joana Filipe, respectively. Ligaya Salazar specialises in contemporary design, fashion and graphics, having devised the V&A Friday Late Programme from 2008-2010, as well as a series of fashion related Friday Lates in Paris in 2012. June 2013 saw her exhibition Memory Palace open at the V&A, which featured a coming-together of a new piece of fiction and twenty new commissions of graphic art and illustration. Joana Filipe is an exhibition designer and producer who designed the Future Fabrics Expo in 2011 and 2012 and New Formations: A Fashion Dialogue in 2013 as part of the International Fashion Showcase. She has also curated the V&A Friday Late Archive in 2011, followed by Speed Collaborating for DesignersBlock in 2012.

The new location at Oval Space will mean that ELCAF is able to uniquely combine the opportunity to buy graphic novels, comics, exclusive and affordable prints and artwork alongside a jam-packed day of events, workshops, talks and screenings for all ages."
