‘mind-expanding R&B’ Trench
23-year-old Greentea Peng (real name Aria) was born and bred in Bermondsey, South East London before her family moved to Hastings when she was an early teen. ‘SENSI’ is her debut EP produced in its entirety by the production team Earbuds (frequent slowthai collaborators behind his breakout tune ‘T N Biscuits’).
For those that don’t hail from the United Kingdom, ‘Peng’ is slang for super attractive or super delicious. And the reason for the greentea part is that “I have a great relationship with green tea” says Aria. ”One time in Peru I found one called ‘greentea seng’. I was super high and I swapped the S for a P and there we have it. Also green is my favourite colour. Trees are green. And weed is green.”
The name anecdote is Aria in a nutshell; dark and light, half soul-searcher and half wise-cracking. “I am fully exploring myself right now” she says ‘all the music is bare honest and frank, the EP is about an ex-partner and my inner battles. I spent the last 6 years of my life not at one with myself. Life can be overwhelming when you don’t have a creative way to channel your energy’. The path to her new release started a few years earlier in Dalston’s legendary nightclub Visions Video bar (now sadly shuttered). She worked behind the bar from her 18th birthday till she was around 21. Visions was a key meeting spot for the Capital’s grime and hip hop artist (Skepta filmed his ‘Man’ video there) and it’s through mates made at Visions, Tea met her future collaborators Earbuds.
‘SENSI’ is a fascinating debut about desire, anxiety and break ups, all gauzy synths, broken boom bap, sage-burning atmospheres and expansive THC dreams. ‘I am shy and a super sensitive person but music is a gift and if you’re going to share it you need to make sure you’re chill and it’s coming from the right place. When I am writing I am being honest and feel like I’m penetrating something deeper.’
