The Pickle Factory’s 2016 in-house programme begins with an evening of deep, celestial house and techno, inviting New York legend Fred P and Uzuri boss Lakuti.

As a DJ, producer and label owner, Fred P has played a crucial role in the renaissance of New York’s house and techno scene. Growing up to a musical family in Brooklyn during the 1980s, Peterkin was exposed to the disco, funk and hip hop that he now effortlessly rolls into his introspective house productions. The Soul People Music boss has also released records for New York contemporaries Underground Quality and The Corner, and most recently a well-received LP on Japanese label Mule Musiq. Yet it’s behind a pair of turntables that Fred P shows his mastery. The New Yorker could claim to be one of the most respected DJs in the dance music world, a deeper than deep digger who specialises in warm, emotive house and thumping US techno.

He’s joined by another purveyor of rich, exquisite house music: South-African born promoter, label owner and DJ Lakuti. Although she’s only stepped behind the decks relatively recently, Lakuti has been at the heart of Europe’s underground community for a long time. Her labels Uzuri and Süd Electronic are a constant source of expertly-made electronics from producers old and new; while her occasional party at Panorama Bar with wife Tama Sumo are the most consistent and adventurous Friday nights on Pbar’s calendar. As a DJ, Lakuti is a truly eclectic selector, capable of seamlessly blending disco, funk and afrobeat into less esoteric 4/4 rhythms.
